Chapter 5
The following week Elizabeth attended an event at Lady Hiltonâs manor.
Could Lady Hilton be the culprit? She had to find out.
Lady Hilton's manor was an imposing spectacle, a testament to the ostentation of the era. The grand ballroom, with its glistening chandeliers, intricate tapestries, and gilded moldings, was a stark contrast to the austere chambers of Wickham. The ladies and gentlemen, in their extravagant attire, were caught up in a whirlwind of dances and pleasantries, oblivious to the grisly secrets hidden beneath their society.
As Elizabeth stepped into Lady Hilton's parlour, a wave of opulence and elegance washed over her. The room was adorned with exquisite tapestries, the colors vibrant and rich, depicting pictures of grandeur and romance. Gilded mirrors adorned the walls, reflecting the soft glow of crystal chandeliers that hung from the ceiling, casting a warm and inviting ambiance.
The air was perfumed with the delicate scent of freshly cut flowers, arranged meticulously in ornate vases. Roses in various hues of red, pink, and white filled the room, their fragrance mingling with the subtle aroma of freshly brewed tea and the gentle crackling of a warm fire in the hearth.
Lady Hilton herself was the epitome of regal elegance. She wore a gown of shimmering silk, the pale blue fabric cascading around her in gentle folds. Her hair was elegantly styled, adorned with delicate pearls that glimmered in the soft light. Every movement she made exuded grace and poise, a testament to her position in society.
The conversations that filled the parlour were a delicate dance of social etiquette and subtle intrigue. Ladies in their fashionable gowns mingled with gentlemen in finely tailored coats, engaging in polite exchanges of gossip and pleasantries. The sound of laughter, tinged with an undercurrent of whispers and secrets, filled the air, adding an air of mystery to the already charged atmosphere.
Amidst the lavish surroundings, Elizabeth observed the contrast between the glamorous facade and the dark reality of the murder that had occurred. It was a stark reminder that beneath the veneer of high society, secrets lurked, and not all was as it seemed. Lady Hilton's parlour was a microcosm of the era, where appearances and reputations could be deceiving, and the truth often lay hidden beneath layers of elaborate manners and societal norms.
But one thing was entirely clear to on entering Lady Hiltonâs parlour. She saw the family quest and knew exactly who was to blame for the death of Mr. Wickham.
The emblem of Lady Hilton was the crow.
The necklace belonged to her.
In fact, on the night of the murder she was at Longbourn. The motive was still unclear to Elizabeth.
"I believe I have the solution to our mystery," Elizabeth announced one evening in the drawing room, with Mr. Darcy, Mr. Bennet, and the constables in attendance.
"And who might this betrayer be?" Mr. Darcy asked, intrigued.
"Lady Hilton," Elizabeth stated with a certainty that silenced the room.
Mr. Bennet sputtered, "Lady Hilton! She is a woman of high standing! Surely you must be mistaken, Elizabeth."
Elizabeth calmly presented the locket she had asked the constables to bring with them.
